Questions

How are FEGLI premiums calculated?

Basic insurance is a flat rate per $1,000 of your Basic Insurance Amount, which is your annual basic pay rounded up to the next $1,000 plus $2,000 (minimum $10,000). Employees pay $0.16 per $1,000 each biweekly pay period; the government pays one-third of the full cost and the Postal Service pays all of Basic for its employees. Options A, B and C are priced by five-year age band: Option A is a flat amount for $10,000 of coverage, Option B is priced per $1,000 of coverage (one to five multiples of your rounded pay), and Option C is priced per multiple ($5,000 for a spouse and $2,500 for each eligible child). Each line is rounded to the cent and then added up.

Why does the Option B premium rise so much with age?

Option B is group term insurance priced by age band, so the rate steps up every five years and keeps stepping up in retirement for any multiple you keep at No Reduction. Per $1,000 of coverage the monthly rate goes from $0.043 under age 35 to $6.24 at age 80 and over, about 145 times higher, while the coverage amount stays the same. The chart on this page shows that path for your own numbers.

What happens to FEGLI coverage and premiums in retirement?

If you carry coverage into retirement, Basic continues at the same rate until age 65. At 65 (or at retirement, if later) you keep the reduction you elected: with 75% Reduction the premium stops and coverage falls 2% a month to 25% of the original amount; with 50% Reduction you pay $0.75 per $1,000 a month for life and coverage falls 1% a month to 50%; with No Reduction you pay $2.25 per $1,000 a month for life and coverage does not fall. Option A becomes free and falls to 25%. For Option B and Option C you choose, multiple by multiple, Full Reduction (free after 65, coverage falls 2% a month for 50 months and then ends) or No Reduction (you keep paying the age-band rate for life and coverage stays level). This calculator models a single election for all multiples.

Is the private term life figure a quote?

No. It is a market estimate built from published average monthly premiums for a healthy non-smoker in the Preferred health class, interpolated to your age and coverage amount. Your actual price depends on your health, your state, the insurer and the underwriting outcome, and it may be higher or lower. We are not a licensed insurance broker or agent and we do not sell, solicit or negotiate insurance. Any link to a provider is labelled, and some are affiliate links.

Is anything I type sent to a server?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser; the rate tables are plain files and your inputs never leave your device. The only exception is the share link: if you copy it, your inputs are encoded in that address so the page can be reopened with the same numbers.

Where do the rates come from, and how do I know they are current?

The rates are entered line by line from OPM Benefits Administration Letter 21-204, Attachment 1, effective October 1, 2021, and were checked against OPM's own calculator on October 13, 2026. The methodology page lists the source, the effective date and every rule applied. If OPM publishes new rates, the effective date shown there is the one to compare.
